Old Parisian market hall, Art Nouveau style, before & during major renovation works

The Carreau du Temple is undoubtedly one of the most sublime and yet fragile survivor of the 19th century French industrial architecture in Paris. I've always been fascinated by this spectacular building imposing its “Art Nouveau” style. Located right in the center of the city in Le Marais district (3rd arr.), this ancient market hall has been a famous popular market place dedicated to the sale of clothing and second-hand leather clothing until the 70's.

In the 80's, the Carreau had lost its attraction. Almost empty, some politicians suggested to destroy it to make room for a parking place. Eventually, after over ten years of sharp negotiations, National authorities as well as the City of Paris voted for the renovation and rehabilitation of the Carreau to make it a multidisciplinary space dedicated to art, sport & cultural activities and events. The restoration project has been conducted by architect Thomas Rouyrre of Studio Milou Architecture during 5 years, between 2009 - 2014.

Living luckily next to it, as a neighbor, I quite naturally wanted to give my point of view and witness the incredible transformation of this old familiar & treasured building. It is how this 5 years project started. Here the results of the “Caro du Temple” series.
